Unnecessary Heat Freak Out

Well….so I was a little freaked out by the heat. I think I told some people at the race it was the hottest temperature I have ever run in (I don’t know the exact race time temperature) but I may have run in similar temperatures a handful of times in North Carolina. However, it most certainly (by at least 10-15 degrees) was the hottest temperature I have ever raced in. Also, I currently usually train in the morning (75 degrees) versus nighttime (90 plus degrees).

Honestly, I think I let the temperature freak me out more than necessary. At three o’clock I was outside (temperature 98 degrees) and changed my goal time to under 24 minutes while telling my partner at work that people that run in this heat are morons. But honestly, by race time it didn’t feel that badly out. However, I was still very worried about going out too fast and being hot. I ran a 23:48ish. My first mile was 7:40. I had a good finish/kick (I wanted to get in under 24) and I didn’t feel too badly after the race at all. I don’t think I am going to be sore tomorrow. Because I didn’t feel really badly either during the race or now I don’t think I pushed myself hard enough. My main gauge of if I was pushing hard enough remains-did I ever feel like walking during the race? The answer is no. But I did have a good time and now I have a better idea of how fast to run in a 5K (faster than today!).

I went to the race with my “moving” friend I mentioned before. He finished in 19 and change-I can’t remember what exactly. That was kind of cool b/c I have heard from his roommate (a mutual friend and my freshman year RA!) that he is fast so I wanted to see him in action. He actually didn’t really race it. Also, I started the race more quickly than him (b/c he was not taking it seriously and was talking or singing or otherwise not paying attention) so I was in front of him for maybe ¼ mile. When he passed me he ran with me for a second and was singing or other such nonsense. I thought, “Oh my God, is he going to sing next to me for 20 plus minutes??” Not to worry, he made a joke to the group and moved on up ahead. Whew! [I am sure he is reading this right now but I already told him how glad I was he sped up and ran by me!]

Audrey congrats! I'm glad it went well. I thought of you when I came out of the movies and walked ~2 miles to my house... sweating like crazy so I hoped that you didn't melt somewhere in the first mile! ;)

That is HOT! I ran the other day in heat like that and I was dying the next day. It really burned up my muscles good. You did a great job in some grueling temps. You rest yourself today and drink your water.

Brave soul in those temps! Congratulations on a strong finishing kick. It's not exactly the easiest course either.
