Mini Meatballs
Today we had a going-away party for one of the dietitians in our group who has resigned and finished her last day today. It was a very nice little party with lots of goodies to eat. On the menu were these little mini-meatballs in a sweet and sour type sauce, and let me tell you...those little mini-meatballs were *very* tasty! I had quite a few, and then went back for quite a few more. I believe if I was at the party for much longer I would have gone back for thirds. I think I was starting to become addicted to the mini-meatballs! Luckily I had work to go do, so I pulled myself away just in time to avoid overdose. Fortunate for me, I had no run planned today so I didn't have to worry about running on a full belly of meatballs! :)
The meatballs were about the highlight of my day. Nothing much else exciting. No run today as I mentioned. I plan on running tomorrow, that is if my feet are behaving themselves. I did sign up for my one spring graduate course (yes, I know, by taking 1 class a semester, it will take me about 5 years to finish a masters...but nonetheless...). I will be taking Diet and Exercise in Chronic Disease Management. Hmmm...sounds like a topic I've visited once or twice or many, many, many times... :) Should be interesting!

As far as grad school goes, I'm in the same boat as you. I tried taking 2 classes a semester, but with full-time and part-time jobs, training, etc, I thought it was more important to enjoy life (and learn) than speed through to get my MS. Good for you on going back to school.
So, would you recommend dietitian as a career for someone contemplating a career move?

Yes, I think I would recommend nutrition for someone thinking about changing careers. The nice thing about being a dietitian is, once you are registered, there are SOOO many different areas of nutrition that you can go into, clinical stuff (hospitals), research, teaching, food service, food/drug companies, wellness, etc... It's a very broad field so if you get bored with something, you have plenty of opportunity otherwise! I think the one downside is, you will never get rich being a dietitian (or I should say, very few do) so if $$ is something that's very important to you, nutrition may not be the way to go. :)

Thanks! I like that you say there are different areas to specialize in. I guess I have a bit of hero's complex, and I want to do something that makes a difference to someone. I don't want to be in the computer field forever (even if the $ is good), so I'm looking at new areas.

barb-so if you already ARE a dietician, what are you in grad school for? if you don't want to get into it on the blog it's all good :) i was just curious b/c it was a career a recently thought about as well.
thanks!

Ah...so many people interested in nutrition! :) Audrey: the reason why I'm going back to grad school for a masters is merely to enhance my capabilities/better myself as a clinician. I don't need a masters, no, but in many ways I'm a glutton for punishment so I figured, why not? :) Seriously though, it will certainly make me more marketable if I were to ever want/need to change jobs. If I ever wanted to teach or do any kind of clinical research the masters is pretty much a must-have thing. And although I don't have plans to change jobs right now, I figure I should do the masters now while I'm still young, have some energy and don't have any children. :) Hope that makes some sense!
