Sans Running

My right hip is achy and sore today, both in the flexor area and the piriformis. I'm sure it's just because my legs are a bit beat up from yesterday's long run. After all, it was my longest run since my last marathon. I'm convinced that my legs will toughen up again one of these days. As today's blog title states, I took the day off from running. I just lifted for an hour and stretched a lot. I also exercised my credit card today (ouch!) when J. and I went shopping at Leesburg Outlets this afternoon. We met training for our first marathon together in 1999, and even though she's not running much these days, we still get together to go shopping, run shorter races, and bake cookies every now and then.

I didn't much done with regard to school today and for that I feel a hint of guilt and stress because my paper is due next week. My plan is to finish before Thanksgiving, so I can get a head start on studying for the final exam. Despite being an academic slacker, I finished up a bunch of minor household chores and made another dent in narrowing down wedding pictures for the photographer's album. At the rate I'm going, we won't have our album until 2006!

Shopping is a form of training! I must have walked about ten miles yesterday in Circuit City while my friend was checking out TVs. Carrying bags is also a form of weight training...ok, I'm rationalizing here, but I like to do it...

Hi Leilani - I am not sure how many marathons you have done or how many long runs you have done in the past.. but I can tell you from my own experience that over time long runs have become easier for me. I feel like my body has adjusted to the pounding and I know what to expect. It helps if you can do you long runs on trails and maintain a reasonable pace so that you are not running too hard. I hope your hip flexor and piriformis is feeling better. Shopping is cross training! I have such a low tolerance for walking around in the mall. It drives my Mother crazy as she asks me how is it possible that I can run for hours and not walk for hours??

Mary, thanks for the encouragement. I guess I feel like I need a breakthrough race to affirm that I didn't peak a few years ago, that there's still potential deep down inside.

That's funny that you can run for hours and not tolerate shopping for marathon stretches. :)

shopping=two thumbs DOWN. next time i am employed i am so getting a personal shopper. unless we're talking about workout clothing, or sneakers, or trendy bags (not purses, but satchel type things), or jackets. THOSE i love buying.

and here's hoping for a breakthrough race :) and a completed wedding album :)
