Name Calling

Perhaps my body parts would behave if I talked to them (like Beth) instead of calling them names. My left quad is affectionately known as "bum quad" at this point in time. Well, I took my bum quad this morning to the chiropractor for some electric stim and it feels a lot looser now. Between that and my massage on Saturday, I've cajoled it into feeling better this week. As I've mentioned before, my quad has been continuously sore for over a month due to some scar tissue and general weakness in my vastus lateralis. My chiropractor gave me some runner-specific one legged strengthening exercises. I have a zillion...okay, maybe not that many...strengthening exercises in my brain from when I originally got my trainer certification in 2000, but not any of these ones. Cool! I always like learning new exercises. In fact, I recently bought a lower body strengthening book with even more exercises.

Since I went to the chiropractor this morning, I won't have time for a run 'til tonight. I did have two great workouts yesterday, though. I swam for 40 minutes in the morning. Although it felt easier than my years of flailing to the other end of the pool, I still don't feel 100% comfortable in the water. Once I build up my endurance, hopefully the "I'm going to drown for sure" feelings will go away.

After work, I did another cutdown fartlek workout. I really do like these. I warmed up for 16 minutes, then did 5 and 4 minute intervals with a 3 minute jog between and 3, 2, and 1 minute intervals with a 1 minute jog between. I started at around 10k pace and worked down to all out for the last 1 minute rep. My legs and hips were a bit stiff from lifting legs on Monday night, so I really had to use my arms to power through each stride. It was sort of an adventure because the trail was dark and curvy, so I had to take extra precautions not to trip on random branches and things on the trail. Then, I cooled down for 19 minutes until I got home. I can't remember the last time that I had that much fun on an alone weeknight training run.

Hopefully more tonight...

Boy, I should use this blog to motivate me to hit the gym! Maybe I'll try [again - hehe] to work out more as my New Year's resolution... hmm, we'll see how long that lasts!

I will be riding down to Va Bch with Jenny on Thursday. And this year, the Christmas party is being held at my Auntie Elma's house... you remember, that yearly tradition we have? So, the party is actually on Friday (Christmas Eve). But, I'll be in Va Bch til Sunday, so we can sometime on Saturday or Sunday.

We'll be in touch :)

Merry Christmas!!!

Sorry to hear of your bum quad... muscle stuff seems to take forever to go away, especially when it has developed as a chronic-type problem.

Another subject, what pace are you shooting for at Freescale? I'm beginning to think of that and wondering if there's a chance we might be shooting for a similar pace.

I'll be thinking happy quad thoughts for you!
